Stykkishólmur has received honarary certificates for eco- and sustainability and along with four other municipalities on the peninsula, was the first community in Europe to get the EarthCheck environmental certification. The town was also the first municipality in Icleand to start fully sorting it´s waste and the first town in Iceland to receive the prestigious Blue flag eco-label for its harbor.
